thoughts on my longest friend

every so often, i'll unexpectedly get a call from the longest friend i've ever had, and somehow, we'll usually end up meeting that same very day, and likely, it will be at one of our houses, and probably, we will end up talking forever, and could keep talking forever... about everything and anything... from the most personal to the societal to the most out of this world.

it's always so comforting to chat with her, because really, we just have a chat. and maybe because of our similar general childhoods and upbringing, and our fascination with this concept of second generation chinese in north america and picking apart the trends of chinese churches, and i wonder if the social worker backgrounds of our parents play a role as well... that i learn sooo much from our conversations. i always feel like a kid, and she the older sister i've always had. one who counsels, one who is real, one who doesn't feed me the typical christian talk, and though older and having experienced lots more, one who has always treated me equally, and understands my personality so well despite us having not spent many years together after a couple of horrendous years intruding into her domain as her mom babysat me.

i think that all these years, i've always looked up to her. i'll never not want to see her because there is always a new window she opens in my mind after we hang out. our conversations make me think not about myself, but of the world and of the society i am a part of, and of my identity.

it's great, and it's refreshing...

and so it was today when I received a call from her in the morning, followed by an awfully fulfilling and pleasant time of discussing, and chatting, and wondering and pretentious venting at the politics and morals that we as chinese canadians are facing. what a friend indeed! i am so blessed to have her, and thank the Lord every day for divinely bringing our families together long before we were born.
