and an unexpected award!
Rob Tingley Class of '95 Developing Countries Award
Awarded to a student in Year 4 of the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program to assist with the travel or program expenses directly related to a medical overseas elective experience through the “Medical Electives Overseas Program (MEOP)". An overseas elective enables a medical student to observe first-hand the primary role of poverty in disease and the natural history of disease. MEOP provides students the opportunity to gain increased cultural awareness and to help students obtain a global perspective of the social contract that medicine must meet and to develop a tolerance and respect for other cultures. The recipient will commit to a 6 to 8 week experience. Only if the elective is considered valuable by the Undergraduate Medical Electives Overseas Committee, will an extension of time be accepted. The recipient will be selected by the Scholarship and Awards Committee of the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry in consultation with the Undergraduate Medical Electives Overseas Committee. This award was established by the friends and family of Dr. Rob Tingley of the Medical Class of 1995. Dr. Tingley’s elective in Kijabe, Kenya (Oct. 29-Dec. 22, 1994) was a life-altering experience. His friends and family have chosen to honour his legacy by enabling future students’ similar experiences.
The first was expected... after so many years! Thank you God for helping me get through. And it will still be His strength as the main support for continuing on and succeeding as an MD!
The latter was a pleasant surprise, and I am truly thankful. I am so undeserving of this, and would not even know why I would be selected, but I thank God that He provided the opportunities to pursue overseas electives, and how perfect this will be in helping to cover the costs of my future international elective in residency.
He really does know best doesn't He? He's got it aaalllll planned out way before!
