Father of Stem Cells!!!

So I watched a short clip in The National last night (the one time I actually do) and it was a brief on two Canadian scientists... who are considered the Fathers of stem cells!! They published a paper back in the 1960s (long long time) identifying these cells and knew they were onto something... and then later on, they were the first to call them stem cells...

ain't the cooool?!? almost 50 years later, stem cells are one of the hottests issues in the research realm...

and then... of course, the bigger news... canada's first embryonic stem cell line made at Mt. Sinai... craziness.. all this research...

what struck me most about all the scientists.. and these thoughts are mostly highly influenced by the reporter, was their attitude... hehe... quiet, humble, nice... "typical canadian humility"was used to describe the two scientists, who are still working together after all these years. wow.

a talk with manuela this morning raised a good point about two of the other doctors and researchers we work with in our department. nice people.. you don't have to be a patient to know that they are good doctors. just the way they talk, their mannerisms, their calm nature, PLEASANT - that's a word that truly describes how these doctors are. And they are ALWAYS smiling... it just brightens up your day... and you feel like they really do want to help those around them... wonderful characteristics that describe a nearly perfect paediatrician. If I become a doctor (i'm still wondering about that one), I would definitely follow in these doctors' footsteps.

Interestingly, I also shared about the same type of admiration about one of the pastors at our church... pastor enoch! while i don't know him personally, is REALLY COOL. same thing - same pleasantness about him that makes you know for sure, that he is a good pastor.

But how can that be? pastor, researchers, doctors... they all work within different environments... so how can they all have the same effect on me, and others?

I guess it all boils down to who you are... your natural personality. your job doesn't shape you. you shape your job. it doesn't matter what title you are given. when you care about your job, and the people you serve, and when you love your job and understand the grand implications and effects of what you are doing, but still remain rooted down in the importance of tiny progressions, it is totally evident.

so a person's basic character is really important. it influences who you are in whatever position you find yourself. it influences YOUR influence on the situations you find yourself in.

so what is your character?
